Singapore bid farewell to the National Stadium today. I caught the closing ceremony on TV. This is a place that holds many special memories for a lot of Singaporeans, including me. Some of the best moments of my life was spent here:

1) National School Track & Field Meet

This is an annual event that kept my secondary school in fervour. The whole school will turn out at the stadium to cheer the athletic team on. The rivalry between schools was not only fought on the tracks but also at the seating gallery. We would try to drown the cheering of ‘rival’ schools. There was also combined cheering with allied schools. It was one of the biggest event in my adolescence that my class even went back to support the school when we were in JC.

2) National School Band Competition

Same as above. We were cheering at the top of our voices for the school band.

3) Michael Jackson Dangerous Tour in 1993

This was my first concert. I had the misfortune to attend the performance that was cancelled because he purportedly fainted!

4) National Day Parade

I participated as a performer in 1986 or 1987 (can’t remember the year). Then from 2001 to 2004, I caught every National Day Parade at the National Stadium because of work.

5) ASEAN CUP

Caught the ASEAN CUP semi-finals and finals. Witness the glory (many will beg to differ) of Singapore football.

It’s sad to see one of Singapore’s landmark, a part of our history, especially one that holds many indelible memories of our youth, going to be demolished. It is not the first time that we tore down old building to make way for new ones. It is something we have to grapple with as the country tries to rejuvenate it’s landscape and economy. Sad way of life in Singapore.

What I had today

Breakfast - Apple and Watermelon

Lunch - Dragon fruit, mango, honeydew, carrot & green apple juice

Dinner - Grilled Dory fish topped with corriander

I went to watch the highly anticipated Transfomers. Hearing Optimus Prime commanding: ” Autobots, transform and roll out!’ really brings back fond memories of my childhood watching the cartoon series. It was really a good movie, especially impressive is the way the robots make their transformations and fighting it out with the Decepticons.

Who is my favourite Autobot beside Optimus Prime? None other than Bumblebee! He was the most endearing Autobot. The other reason is because he is a Chevrolet Camaro. Just simply Chevy!

What I had today

Breakfast - Rose apple and watermelon

Lunch - Carrot + green apple juice, soup

Dinner - Yong Tau Foo

Had a lousy day at work today. Was stuck in a meeting from 2.30pm - 6.00pm. At the end of the meeting, it suddenly struck me that the next major deadline is on 17 Jul! Got to really work harder now, even on weekends. Maybe no need to so 卖命 on weekends, but try to clear some work if possible. Boss says we should be able to pull through this event.

The only thing that gave me some respite from work today was looking at The Bermuda Guy’s photos from his Vietnam trip. That only affirmed my desire to go Vietnam, to execute the itinerary I had painstakingly crafted last weekend.
