MRB passed me a newspaper article ‘Another first for Singapore: Fastest walkers in the world’ to read. I’ve heard about the findings on the radio while driving to work this morning. He says I am a fast walker. I won’t deny that coz even my running kaki, Mr Ho, says I can out walk him anytime.Just a few days ago, as I was driving to work, I suddenly noticed that this piece of land along my usual jogging route has been cleared of all the greens to make way for some construction. I drive past the place everyday and I did not even notice the change. The article is a timely one reminding me to stop being in a rush all the time and take time to appreciate the beauty of life.

This is the season where people in the organisation go through all kinds of emotion roller coaster. Some will rejoice at getting promoted while others despair at missing out any their chance of promotion. Then there are people who are nonchalant about the result of the promotion exercise.

I’m generally nonchalant about the promotion exercise. Life goes on whether you are promoted or not. It’s not the end of the world. Years ago, a supervisor has already enlightened me on how the promotion mechanism works so I have a very realistic expectation of my advancement. Nonetheless, I was still being ‘counselled’ today as I was not promoted. It’s kind of weird to be ‘counselled’ coz I never expected it.

During the counselling, we discussed about moving on to the private sector. I was shared on how people in top echelon of the private sector are rewarded handsomely when economy is performing well. However, during the economy down turn, it is likely to be these group of people and the low performers who may be retrenched as they are more expensive to be retained. Hence, if you fall in the middle band, you are likely to survive the retrenchment. Isn’t it interesting how mediocrity can be a good thing some times?
